Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Merciless Necropolis

I ran blindly into the dark hall, tripping over my feet. Flashes of light revealed blood-splattered walls. Savage and deranged psychiatric patients with nasty cuts and purple bruises peeking through their crisp white gowns sought my attention. However, the sound of attacking spirits was background noise to Meggy's screeches. Only the continuous chill from passing right through spirits reminded me I was in a relay race with them.

I pushed open a door. Inside was another bedroom, but the inmate wasn't as clean and sane as the last. The bed sheets were thrown astray, and angry cries for help covered the walls in blue ink.

“Jules, what happened? You're bumbling through the building,” Logan spoke in my ear.

“Shhh!” I pulled the headpiece away from my ear and listened hard for Meggy. Her shouts were moving farther away. I had to get out of the Dark Ward.

I backed out of the room and fumbled down a flight of stairs, three at a time. Unstable patients tried to block my way and trip me up. At the bottom, I pulled open the door and felt cool air slap my face. I stood on a porch facing a massive field spotted with gravestones.

I scanned the horizon. Rectangular bushes were lined in front of whitewashed headstones, like a row of beds for eternal rest. There was a low buzz, barely audible and ominous. “I'm at the base of the Merciless Necropolis,” I informed Logan. The moon glared at me from above, and the fog curled at my feet, daring me to come forward. A flash of shiny blue material from the Corpus runner's uniform flashed in the distance.

Something whizzed past my head. The skeletal winged object looked like a withering angry bird. I wasn't sure if it was solid or translucent. As another flew by, I decided not to take any chances. I ducked and ran into the creepy graveyard.

A few feet into the dreary collection of stones, mausoleums, and armed statues, I hid behind the gnarled trunk of a tree and caught my breath. Where was Meggy? Why wasn't she screaming anymore? Could something have happened? I didn't want to believe it.

I peered around the base of the tree and gasped.

“What's wrong?” Logan hissed in my ear.

On the opposite side of the tree was a hungry tiger. Double my size, he paced the space, licking his chops. He gave a monstrous roar that shook the leaves in the tree.

“Yeah, this section is the animal graveyard,” Logan informed me, like it was an afterthought. “They can't hurt you, though. They're still spirits.” I wondered if he could hear my teeth chattering with fear.

Keeping my eyes open and my senses alert, I scanned my surroundings. Vicious dogs, evil monkeys, and clawing birds stalked the uneven grounds. Even the mounds of dirt looked like they were in attack mode.

Meggy's screams started again, and my stomach clenched. “Jules, you need to keep searching for bones. The spirits won't let you pass until you have all the remains.
